In 1959, entrepreneur, actor and innovator, Captain Carlos Camacho, established a small, mail-order company specializing in non-prescription pharmaceuticals. Laboratorios Mayov was brought to life with the heartfelt purpose to serve Mexican immigrants of the Southwestern United States. Carlos’ experience and strong affiliations with local radio stations were the initial drive in promoting Mayov products. Eventually, Carlos decided to build his own radio program wherein he could also include the promotion of Mayov’s products into the format of the show. Carlos’ brother, Jorge Camacho, was recruited and quickly learned all aspects of the business and eventually began producing his own radio programs for Laboratorios Mayov. Upon Carlos’ untimely death in 1976, Jorge made the decision to establish Laboratorios Camacho in July of 1977, applying his vast experience in radio broadcasting and the mail-order business to his own radio program showcasing traditional Mexican singers and musicians, along with the sale of his products under the Laboratorios Camacho label. As with Carlos, Jorge formed Laboratorios Camacho, with the primary purpose to serve the Hispanic community.
The Laboratorios Camacho shows, with Jorge Camacho as radio announcer, have aired seven days a week on early morning shows for over 35 years. His widely popular programs feature traditional Norteña, Mariachi and Ranchera music, and include listeners’ song requests and individual song dedications. Frequent visitors and guest artists over the years have included popular, big-name personalities from radio, music, television and movie industries. Through his radio program, Jorge has been able to reach a wide-ranging audience and introduce the Laboratorios Camacho products to valued customers all over the world.
With the vast success of his radio show and the strong desire to get the Laboratorios Camacho products into customers hands quicker, Jorge decided to open the first bricks and mortar store in Bell, California. In January of 1983, the first Casa Camacho retail store was opened and is still in operation today. The stores quickly expanded throughout Southern California, as well as into Southwestern Texas. Casa Camacho stores have not only become a convenient way to serve the local community but have also become a way in which Laboratorios Camacho has been able to continue to serve customers and the community in a friendly and helpful manner.
