Melatonin is a brain hormone that regulates the body\'s biological clock. It has been suggested that changes in melatonin secretion may cause sleep disturbances. Many doctors suggest taking 3 mg of melatonin one-and-one-half to two hours before bedtime. Melatonin works with your biological clock by telling your brain when it is time to sleep. Melatonin does not increase your sleep drive or need for sleep.
Melatonin is called the “Vampire Hormone” because it is produced primarily in darkness and inhibited by light. The levels of your melatonin increase in the middle of the night and gradually fall as the night turns to morning, so exposure to light before bed can push your biological clock in the wrong direction – making melatonin ineffective.
Melatonin treats Circadian Rhythm Disorders (where you sleep the right amount of minutes but your body clock is at the wrong time), Shift Work Sleep Disorders, and early morning awakenings – all things that deal with the timing of your need to sleep.
Melatonin releases from the pineal gland, reaching its peak at night to help maintain healthy cell health throughout the body.82 Secretion of melatonin declines significantly with age, as the pineal gland becomes calcified.83 Jet lag, shift work, and poor vision can disrupt melatonin cycles.84-86 Melatonin keeps our circadian cycle in tune. Not only does this hormone work to maintain cell health, it appears to regulate a system of self-repair and regeneration. As melatonin diminishes with age, our biological functions are impaired. Melatonin also has strong antioxidant properties. It directly scavenges both hydroxyl and peroxyl free radicals, and it does so more effectively than most other antioxidants. It also greatly potentiates the efficiency of other endogenous and exogenous antioxidants. Melatonin is especially important for protecting cellular DNA against peroxynitrite damage by inhibiting peroxynitrite free radical reactions. Some research has found that melatonin increases the speed of falling asleep and adds to the quality of sleep in the majority of people who use it. For the temporary relief of occasional insomnia.
